Diamond Stud Earring Size Guide: Which Carat Weight Is Right for You?

Round lab-grown diamond stud earrings in 14K white gold, angled view

The first question almost everyone asks about diamond studs is how big they should be. The answer depends on three things: how you plan to wear them, your ear size, and your budget. This guide shows what each carat weight actually looks like so you can choose with confidence.

Quick answer: for everyday wear, 1.00 to 2.00 ctw (total weight of the pair) looks refined and noticeable without being heavy. Go to 3.00 ctw or more if you want a statement.

Carat weight is not the same as size

Carat measures weight, not width. What you see when someone wears studs is the diameter of the stone from the top. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can look slightly different in size depending on how they are cut.

Studs are also sold by carat total weight (CTW), which means the combined weight of both earrings. A 2.00 ctw pair is two diamonds of about 1.00 carat each.

How to choose your size

1.00 ctw: the everyday pair

At about 5 mm each, 1.00 ctw studs are easy to wear daily, to work and with any outfit. They read as a clear flash of sparkle rather than a statement. If this is your first pair of diamond studs, this is a safe starting point.

1.50 to 2.00 ctw: noticeable, still classic

This is where studs start to get noticed from across a table. A 2.00 ctw pair, with roughly 6.4 mm stones, is the size many people picture when they think of classic diamond studs.

3.00 to 4.00 ctw: the statement pair

At 7 to 8 mm per stone, these are bold. They suit people who want their earrings to be a focal point, and they look best with a simple setting that keeps attention on the diamond.

Other things that change how studs look and feel

Backings: push-back or screw-back

Push-back earrings are comfortable and easy to put on. Screw-back earrings hold the post more securely, which many people prefer for larger, heavier stones. We offer both options on our lab-grown diamond stud earrings.

Metal color

White, yellow and rose gold change the feel of the same diamond. Our studs come in all three in 14K gold. See our guide to choosing between 14K white, yellow and rose gold.

Color and clarity

Our studs use IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds in D to F color and VVS1 to VS1 clarity. If you want to know what those grades mean, read diamond color and clarity explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is the carat weight per earring or for the pair?

Studs are usually listed by total weight for the pair. A 1.00 ctw listing is two stones of about 0.50 carat each. Always check whether a listing shows total weight or weight per stud before comparing prices.

What size diamond studs should I buy for everyday wear?

For daily wear, many people choose 1.00 to 2.00 ctw. It gives clear sparkle without feeling heavy or fragile.

Will bigger studs feel heavy?

Diamonds are small and the gold post is light, so even 4.00 ctw studs are comfortable for most ears. A screw-back adds security for the larger sizes.

How do I look after my studs?

Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and store them separately. Our care guide has the full routine.

Is a diamond stud a good gift?

Studs do not need sizing, which makes them one of the easiest diamond gifts to get right. See our diamond jewelry gift guide for ideas by budget.
